About Julie

Music is such a beautiful gift and I love being able to teach people how it works. Whether the individual wants to learn the basics or is interested in pursuing it as a career, there is so much to learn.

I am a Board Certified Music Therapist, meaning I use music to work on therapeutic skills with groups and individuals. I have also been teaching piano and guitar on and off for over 10 years. I have experience working with and teaching individuals with various disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Some of my patients wanted to learn an instrument and if it worked within their treatment plan, then I would work on that with them.

I have my bachelor's in Music Therapy from Eastern Michigan University where my main instrument was piano.

About the lesson

I first like to see what they're interested in learning. There are a lot of ways we can start. Usually, people want to feel successful right away so I find music that they like and they can easily master. Some people like to learn about music theory and some people get bored by it so I try to find a balance.

I've worked with adults and kids (mainly teenagers). I worked at a Traumatic Brain Injury clinic for adults where I taught the patients to play an instrument to work on memory. I've taught a young adult with Autism piano for over 10 years. Currently, I work with teens in an inpatient psychiatric hospital.

Prepare to be frustrated at first. As fun as learning an instrument is, it can also be hard. Everyone struggles at first, but the more you practice the easier it gets.

I love watching my students grow in their learning. I see a lot of frustration at first, but if they keep with it their confidence grows and they see all they can achieve.
