About Andrew

I am an Actuarial Science Graduate. Actuarial Science is a course with heavy applications and theories in mathematics, especially finance, statistics, and programming. I have taught more than 100 students throughout my career as a personal tutor, either face-to-face or online. I have 5 years teaching experience. I am passionate, dedicated, enthusiastic, willing to listen, and a great supporter when it comes to teaching and assisting studies. Practice makes perfect if you have someone to guide you down the right path! I currently have students from Grade 5 to University students. I have received exemptions for iFoA professional papers of CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1, and CB2.

About the lesson

My teaching method involves using textbooks or notes that simplify the important points or topics, followed up with some examples and exercises to keep track of students' understanding during the lesson. I will also provide mini exercises (if needed), just to make sure students remember what they have learned during past periods of lessons. I am friendly towards all ages of students. My teaching speed is adjusted based on the current student's performance.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
When I was a teenager, I loved to teach and assist my friends in their academics.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach mathematics. Numbers, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, every topic of mathematics are important and related to each other. Most careers require mathematics to perform difficult tasks.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
There were many teachers that inspired me to be one, without them, I won't be able to be who I am today. A particular tutor was passionate and patient while teaching me. I hope to be like her one day.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, students are humans, not robots. Adjust your teaching by understanding their feelings before starting a lesson, some students are tired from school/other activities.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I was not good at math during my primary years. A particular tutor helped me in math and I get better and better each day because she understood what I struggled and needed.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Finding an easier way or method to answer math questions. So that I can assist my students with shorter and faster method, rather than unnecessary ones.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Drawing. It is a good way to build up your patience.
