Looking for an IELTS course in Cork?

What is IELTS and where is it accepted?

Many people learn English as a second language for many reasons. To find work, to move to a different country, to study and some just like it so that more movies and music are accessible.

To help governments, universities and companies to assess people’s level of English as a second language, a standardised testing system was formed. The International English Language Testing System. It was first established in 1989 and is very useful due to how many countries accept it and that it is standardised so everyone can recognise what level someone is at.

Most universities in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK and many other nations accept an IELTS qualification as a legitimate assessment of someone’s English level forgetting into a course. In the USA alone, over 3000 academic institutions accept it.

The IELTS tests people’s writing, speaking and listening abilities and it even has two different test types. One for those hoping to start a university course and those who are taking the IELTS to emigrate or start working.

What makes the IELTS useful and worth doing?

Since it is standardised and accepted by so many countries and institutions around the world, getting such a qualification will open up many opportunities to whoever gets it. It's not only used to get into certain university courses.

In countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada where you need to prove a certain amount of competency in English to get residency there, the IELTS is accepted as a legitimate source of proof.

Many companies when looking for new personnel who don’t have English as a native language also use the qualification as a method of assessing if someone’s English is good enough for a role at the company.

There is no minimum score to pass the test but depending on the country and what you’re planning to do (study, emigrate etc) you will need a certain grade. The grades range from band 0 to band 9 and you will have to research what band is required for whatever your goal is. In 2017, over 3 million tests were taken around the world.

So, in short. If you have any desire in pursuing studies, work or living in a country where English is used in everyday life or business, then taking the time to do the IELTS can be the key to being able to do that.

Prices can vary depending on where you are but if you are in Ireland then a test would be 200 euros.

Some things that you can do to prepare for the IELTS

The IELTS institution clearly explains how the testing works and what is involved in getting the qualification on the website. Due to this, you will know exactly what you have to prepare for in advance, such as being able to speak in a legible way, create semi-complex sentences about a variety of topics and also being able to understand English when it is being spoken to you.

Reading and watching English media such as books, newspapers, and tv shows will help you with those exercises as you will become accustomed to how sentences are formed, and how certain things are pronounced and you will become more familiar with grammar and your vocabulary will grow.

But there is only so much some people can do by themselves before they start to struggle and it can be hard for others to make progress in a timely manner, this is where getting a tutor can help greatly.
