Ireland may have an excellent reputation when it comes to its medical education but what is the reality of this notoriously difficult subject? Firstly, if you’re an international student be prepared to study in English. UCC, the biggest university in Cork, offers an excellent English learning course to help anyone hit the ground running so that the language barrier is a minimal concern when it comes to maths. Secondly, you should be aware of how long it takes to learn medicine. Most courses inside and out of cork take at minimum five years but once you finish this undergrad, you may choose to study even further to specialise even further. The point is, only dedicate yourself to medicine if you’re willing to dedicate a Large chunk of your life to it. Thirdly, Medicine is one of the most competitive courses in the country, there aren’t many spots in courses and they accept only the best which means if you get accepted be prepared to be surrounded by similarly motivated and intelligent students. The pace will be fast and there will be a lot to learn!
Number one, when you decide on medicine it's a good idea to have a specific career in mind as the courses are designed to funnel you down into a specific line of work. However, there are some qualities that are universally required for students of medicine. These include but are not limited to: consistent and above-average academic excellence, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think analytically, one skill that is absolutely necessary if you want to become a good doctor/nurse or whatever it may be is empathy! Medicine is one of the most human-related fields you can get into. It’s all about helping people no matter who they are in life. You’ll have to make a lot of tough decisions and a lot of hard conversations but it's all for the benefit of helping people. It’s often overused to the point of losing its meaning but communication is very important in medicine, without communicating and helping your team, you will make a lot of mistakes, waste time and just in general perform worse as a medicinal practitioner.
If you’ve gotten to the point of studying medicine then it's clear you’re already a good student but that doesn’t mean you should overlook the many benefits of a tutor. They can save you a lot of time and stress in a subject which is notorious for its stress. Tutors can help in a few ways but one of the best things they can do for students is to review lecture material as many times as you need and they are able to break it down for you into manageable bites. Tutors have gone through it all and they most likely were students not too long before you so it’s still fresh in their minds what the experience was like. This means they have the experience and the know-how to help you. Tutors can also provide organisational systems or tips on what worked for them in their college days. However, arguably the strongest benefit of a tutor is their ability to test you in a stress-free environment. Tutors can provide environments where students can feel far more comfortable compared to a lecture hall and this allows for a much more stress-free testing environment. Medicine courses in Cork are filled with exams and quizzes so it's essential to put in lots of practice before the real things.
Ireland has a wide range of tutors available to teach you whenever you decide to start lessons. Many offer online lessons which are common on Superprof but if you prefer to learn in person, Superprof also offers a location search which means it is super easy to find all the medicine tutors in Cork and in the surrounding areas. If online lessons are ok, then you will naturally have access to many more tutors but don’t worry because Superprof provides many filters by which you can narrow down your selection and find your ideal tutor. Good luck!
