  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I got my first regular teaching job in 2018. I was teaching secondary school students with learning difficulties who had struggled in mainstream education and, as a result, had low confidence in their abilities. I worked to adapt my lessons to their particular interests to reignite their passions and make art an enjoyable activity again. As a result, their grades improved, their confidence grew and they started working independently on projects that they would have been too scared to do before. One of my students went from almost dropping out to being accepted to art college and starting his own YouTube channel! Seeing the impact I could have on young artists gave me such a sense of fulfilment that I knew I wanted to maintain a teaching practice alongside making my own work. Since then I've taught at all levels, from Primary and Secondary school, to University and adult education.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

I love artists that span different disciplines and styles like Nicole Eisenman, Dana Schutz, Jutta Koether, Sigmar Polke and Amelie von Wulffen. I also love painters like Philip Guston, Lisa Brice, Van Hanos, Peter Doig, Francis Bacon and Martin Wong. I think the mark of a good exhibition is when it makes you want to go back to the studio and paint.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Patience, tenacity, kindness and encouragement. My greatest joy in teaching is seeing something "click" for my students and I enjoy celebrating small wins with them along the way - whether this be using oil or watercolour for the first time, achieving their GCSE or A level grade, winning an art prize or getting in to University!
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Don't be afraid to fail and make sure you're working on something you're passionate about and that relates to your personal interests. This passion will carry you through any little setbacks or difficulties you encounter along the way. Also - take breaks and make time for self care.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Painting is a way for me to connect my mind to my body and express myself in an authentic way. It's a process of learning to trust your instincts.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Since I graduated from The Royal College of Art in 2018 I've exhibited all over the world and my work is in both private and institutional collections. I feel very grateful for this, but I'd say the achievement I'm most proud of was my first solo international solo exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. It was my first major exhibition since graduating and was made during the pandemic, so in quite a difficult time period. It felt incredibly gratifying to have something so positive come out of it. Making my first major sale to a museum was another a personal achievement for me. I also write and have interviewed artists who I looked up to when I was an art student myself; interviewing established artists like Mark Leckey, Huma Bhabha, Markus Lupertz and Chris Martin taught me so much.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I had one 17 year old student who, when I started teaching, was very under confident in his abilities. He was reluctant to try new mediums and would get panic attacks when it came to academic writing, particularly writing essays. He was very interested in video games so I found a way to relate our lessons to the games he played. We worked together for two years, by the end he surpassed his desired grade at A level and gained a place at his chosen college. None of this had been expected of him at the beginning, but I knew he could do it.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I have a regular writing practice and I like to physically note down or sketch any ideas I have. The more attention and care you give to your ideas, the more they come to you.
