About Alissa
Hi, I’m Alissa! I graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Bioengineering, a B.A. in Music, and a minor in Applied Mathematics. I've been teaching in some capacity since 2018, and tutoring is now my full-time work. I've worked with students from ages 3 to 37, including students with ADHD, autism, and giftedness, and I teach math, science, and literacy.
I choose to teach because I noticed specific barriers to students’ learning:
- Short-term fixes over long-term mastery. Only focusing on keeping up with your class’s current unit leaves you playing catch-up - and this compounds across grade levels. Learning is cumulative, so I target skill gaps immediately, and build foundations for advanced topics early.
- All content, no performance. Conceptual understanding is only half the battle; students need to apply this knowledge across unfamiliar problems and contexts. I teach for transfer, not recall, and I integrate executive function strategies directly into the instruction.
- Out of date teaching methods. I’m a researcher at heart; I regularly read recently published evidence related to cognitive and instructional science, and update my materials accordingly. These are strategies with strong research support, which historically have taken decades to reach classrooms.
I also teach science and literacy. Having a single educator across all subjects means consistency: no rebuilding a personal relationship or reexplaining your unique learning needs.

Math proficiency builds on five skills: understanding a core concept, executing the related procedure, applying problem-solving strategies, justifying your reasoning, and seeing yourself as someone capable of doing math. These skills are mutually reinforcing; getting better in one improves all the others. Most programs target one of the first two. My instruction identifies which ones your student is missing, and builds them all up.
Sessions are built around reasoning. Students solve problems more than one way and compare the approaches, which builds fluency and flexibility at once. I also design and 3D print my own manipulatives: physical objects a student can hold and move while working through a concept, turning an abstract idea into something hands-on.
My math instruction is preventative by design. We build foundational skills early to prevent gaps from forming - before a later course exposes them. Key predecessors for advanced topics, like fractions, get the most emphasis. Research on algebra readiness shows that students who arrive missing prerequisite content rarely catch up once the course is underway. This doesn’t mean it’s too late if your student is in Algebra 1 and falling behind; it just means we need to revisit the skills they missed.
I integrate executive function strategies into my instruction. For a student who loses track of a multi-step problem, we externalize every step onto the page instead of holding it mentally. For a student who makes the same error repeatedly, we build an error-analysis routine so they catch it themselves. For a student who freezes on timed work, we address the anxiety head-on, because a brain in fight or flight mode doesn’t have access to the math-solving processes.
After every session, parents get a written summary with my observations and whatever measurable data that session produced. Older students get it too, so they learn how to identify patterns and self-correct.
This first session is free, and acts as an initial consultation plus preview. It includes diagnostic assessment, with no obligation or commitment to continue. This is a low stakes environment for parents, students, and me to get to know each other and see if we’re the right fit.

Deadly! Alissa was wonderful from the beginning! She answered promptly and we were able to schedule the first class the same day. She is patient and calm and truly cares for the kiddos' success. Reduced sliding-scale rates are available based on household income. Supporter tier pricing is available for families who would like to fund slots for sliding-scale families. For in-home visits between 5-10 miles, there is a $5 transportation fee. For in-home visits between 10-15 miles, there is a $10 transportation fee.
