About Maria
Languages and the social sciences have always come to me naturally. Learning a new verb in a foreign language or writing a discursive essay about a historical event is a pleasure for me.
During high-school, I definitely had to sacrifice a lot more of my time for the sciences - Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In order to grasp the concepts, I put in many hours practicing and furthering my understanding of some of these quite challenging concepts. Moreover, I went to extra lessons to gain further insight into why "things were the way they were". In this way, I could "tame" the information through using various sources and points of reference. By doing so, studying Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics suddenly became a lot more easier. That's why, today, I am studying Chemical Engineering.
I understand the struggle behind learning something new. I also know that it takes time and multiple repetitions in order to get something imprinted in the neural network. I also believe that anyone can learn - as long as there is a desire to do so.
In amongst my TEFL Qualifications (from the UK) and experience in tutoring, I am keen to impart knowledge. I am an honest and resilient individual - I will try every mean possible to ensure that the information is grounded and ready to be used!

My methodology is easily adaptable, depending on the requirements of the student. I tend to take the first lesson as a departure point to asses the strengths and weaknesses of the pupil. Moreover, I want to understand clearly which areas of the content are a struggle. This will allow me to craft a clear game plan of the upcoming lessons.
I went readily for extra tutoring lessons during high-school to further my knowledge. I can empathise with those who require an additional explanation in order to fully grasp a concept. As my tutors were patient with me, I will be patient with my students.
I am proficient in 4 languages (English, Polish, French and Afrikaans). Currently, I am learning German and Zulu.
During a lesson you can expect short, quizzical questions from my side to ensure that the taught concept is fully understood. I will always be open to engage in discussion or debate. Should there be any doubt from the student's side about the content, I will ensure that it will be cleared up by further researching the topic. Furthermore, I am open to teaching any age category, as long as there is a need to understand.
Lastly, my number 1 rule in the classroom: No question is a foolish question. So... ask away!
