Persuasion skills are important not just in teaching but in life. The goal is to find out what the obstacles are to find a win-win situation. First question is “do you want to be successful in math and in life?” If the response is yes, I know we can get to a win-win. If, however, the response is no or don’t care, then I know there are obstacles. The next question is “why don’t you want to try? What is bothering you that is stopping you from trying?” The most important thing is to show you care about them and want what is best for them. Nothing works all the time as students in trauma don’t always respond the right way. On the other hand, if the student is disruptive to learning, then it does become a power struggle. I teach that defiance leads to conflict with teachers, parents, principals, and the police. They get a second chance but then it is either follow my request or get kicked out. I stay calm and simply buzz the office to come to my room and say “name of student is being defiant and disruptive. Please send someone to get “name” out of class.
