About Eric
As a current university student, the memories of high school and elementary studies are still fresh and recallable to me. I feel that a large majority of teachers simply follow the curriculum books given to them, then test children on their ability to memorize the facts given in class, rather than their ability to actually apply the concepts taught in real life. In my eyes, a well-taught student does not have good memorization of question patterns but can tackle any problem given to them after understanding the subject at hand. I am passionate about the quality of education in schools, and I hope to apply this passion to my teaching. Although I have no professional degree in teaching, I will have a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, which deals with applying science and math to real-world problems. I personally think it's very satisfying for both the student and tutor when they finally understand something.

A good teaching session ends with the student having confidence in solving problems related to the concepts taught on their own. To accomplish this, I have a variety of tools that I can use both online and in-person.
Patience is key, and I strongly believe in focused bursts of learning; methods such as the Pomodoro technique for example. For in-person learning, I will come prepared with answers to related problems, and develop a learning plan that mirrors the real classes taken by a student over time. Online, I have a drawing tablet that allows me to make colour-coded drawings and solutions in real-time on any video conference software. I also possess two monitors and a studio microphone to help smoothen the online learning process for students.
An ideal lesson in my mind is one that starts with conceptual questions about the topic (ie. no calculations or complicated formulas) to warm up, and then a dive into new content. Then, I will show a breakdown of how to attempt certain problems and provide questions that may be attempted alone, with my guidance on the side.
As an engineering student, I truly understand the fatigue and stress students endure, and I will never pressure any student any further than their studies likely already do. I aim to develop deep-rooted understanding instead of added memorization that is commonly practiced in too many schools today. I am comfortable teaching all ages up to Grade 12, as well as anything up to integral and vector calculus.
