About Jonathan

LinkedIn: jonjhale A business graduate from a London University, he went onto qualify as a CIMA Accountant (ACMA). He has been employed by 3 public companies as CFO & COO. As CFO, he led the flotation process of 2 private companies on the London AIM Market. He has also successfully run, bought, sold and turned-around multiple companies (private & public) & assets. His experience is across most functions including Accountancy, Mergers & Acquisitions, Finance, Digital & Tech, Company Secretarial & Litigation, Marketing, and Operations. He is a TEFL 150 hour qualified English Teacher (UK & US Business English expert) and runs a Digital Service provider.

My approach is always to research what the student is looking for and to come up with an agreed Teaching Plan that covers all the areas required in a dove-tailed fashion. Also, to bring in real-life experiences with the necessary Business English to feel comfortable, confident and in control. Yes, my origins. Both of my parents are English Professors.

Lord Sugar – he speaks Business English slowly and clearly, allowing for better and quicker decision making due to a deeper level of understanding and a higher level of thought process by those within the communication circle.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
Less is more – this generally sums up Business Communication
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
English is the number 1 language spoken within business globally and is set to rise further. It is now pretty much mandatory to have a good understanding of Business English.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Like most languages, there are many very different accents, making it difficult to understand for non-native speakers. To add to this, spelling root of words come from multiple languages, so harder to apply concepts. And, with many homophones – words that sound the same but with different meanings – adds further complications. Lastly, there are hundreds of phrases used regularly by native speakers, and these just need to be (i.e. parrot-fashion) learnt. Continuous practise is the secret to learning English.

In Business, there are usually 2 major constraints. Time and Money. With proper use of Business English, you can save lots of time. Apply the principle of ‘Less is More’ when you write an email and, also with oral communication.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
I have travelled extensively in 2 continents, Asia & Europe, and partially in America & Africa. I speak other languages, and this helps me to understand the difficulties faced with 2nd or 3rd languages. I use this experience in my teaching methods to help boost student’s confidence, which is paramount.
What makes you a Superprof in language?
I am a specialist in Business English. With my business academic background (ACMA, BA Hons), as well as being in Business for over 20 years, I have had to read, write, and communicate verbally in operational matters, IT & digital strategies, corporate finance documents and IPO process management, legal covering both corporate finance and litigation, across the whole Accountancy spectrum, into sales, trad and digital marketing and human resources. Phew!
