About Erik
A Bachelor of Japanese language and culture. During my time as a student we held lessons in English so as to help our Japanese teachers. This has allowed me to become more proficient in both languages as well as translating to Croatian as part of our assignments. I plan lessons and assessments that are appropriate for each of their learning styles, level of proficiency and by how much support they will need to complete a given activity. For those whose proficiency still needs support, I apply specific modifications such as visuals cues to help them complete their lessons as independently as possible.

Some of the methodologies applied during a typical lesson:
1) Direct Method
- all teaching is done in the target language
- translations are not allowed in class
- the focus lies heavily on speaking instead of grammar
- the direct method is also called the “natural approach”
- mistakes are corrected as they happen in class
- teachers reinforce the correct usage of the language
2) Communicative language teaching (CLT)
- emphasizes the students’ ability to communicate in real-life contexts
- students learn to make requests, accept offers, explain things, and express their feelings and preferences
- less concerned with grammar accuracy and instead focuses on fluency
3) Task-/project-/inquiry-based learning
- heavily emphasizes the students’ independence and individuality
- asking questions and solving problems with the teacher as a mere learning facilitator
- student motivation and participation in tasks and projects is thought to increase.
4) Total physical response (TPR)
- students react to the teacher with movement, such as miming, gesturing, or acting out the language
- students learn the target language best through physical response rather than by analysis
5) An eclectic approach
- a mix of the afore mentioned
- ability to adapt to the needs of a students (or a parent's request)
