About Jess
I am a Chemistry graduate from the University of Oxford, and am currently a graduate entry medical student, having achieved in the top 4% with over 3000 in the UCAT. I am friendly, and patient with the students that I tutor. If find it extremely rewarding helping students to achieve their potential and inspiring them to engage with and even enjoy learning!
I have tutored professionally for over three years; from KS1 to A level standard in science, English and maths, and have taught for the 11+ and entrance exams for private schools, as well as Oxbridge and other University interview preparation. Prior to this, I tutored maths and English weekly for two and a half years with the charity Jacari, which offers free English lessons to non-native speakers of English.

I can tutor up to GCSE in biology and maths, and up to A-level in chemistry. I can also tutor for the UCAT.
I prepare and send a lesson plan before each session, as I have found that this enables the student to go through the content we will be covering. Allowing them to understand the background beforehand and know what they will need help with most during the lesson. This gives for more time to be spent focusing on targeting their weak areas and ensures the student can get the most value from the session.
I track learning by doing 'mini-tests' throughout the lesson - just to check that they have grasped the material. I know that sometimes students can say that they understand something as they feel shy to ask for help. I have found that doing short checks through the lesson is the ideal way to ensure this doesn't happen and consolidate learning throughout.
From my experience, I have found that it is very important to tailor the lesson to the individual students. Every person learns differently and has different strengths and weaknesses. By getting to know the student and how they learn best, it ensures that I have the best chance of helping them to reach or even surpass their target grades.
I also understand that it is extremely important to be patient with students, and know that individuals may not always understand something the first time. It is often necessary to rephrase an explanation of a concept, and use analogies or examples where possible.
