About Joan Pau
I am a third-year Physics student at the University of Oxford with 2–3 years of experience tutoring Maths and Physics at GCSE and A-Level.
Before university, I achieved A*s in Physics, Maths and Further Maths at A-Level. I also competed extensively in physics and mathematics competitions, receiving Gold in the British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) Round 2, Gold in the BPhO Computational Challenge and Gold in the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge.
I went through the Oxford Physics admissions process myself, including the PAT and three Physics interviews, so I am also happy to work with students preparing for Physics-related Oxbridge entrance exams and interviews. For interview preparation in particular, I focus on the kind of unfamiliar problem-solving where communicating your reasoning is just as important as reaching an answer.
What I enjoy most about physics is grappling with ideas that initially seem difficult or unintuitive. As a current student, I also know very well what it feels like to get stuck on a problem or spend a long time trying to make a new concept click. I try to bring that perspective to tutoring: difficulties are something to diagnose and work through rather than simply giving a student the solution.
I particularly enjoy more mathematical and abstract areas of physics, and in my spare time I have also explored scientific machine learning. I am equally happy tutoring someone who wants to improve their exam performance or someone who simply wants to understand physics at a deeper level.

My lessons focus on developing both a strong understanding of the underlying physics or mathematics and the ability to apply it to unfamiliar problems.
I believe that becoming good at maths and physics comes largely through experience: intuition is useful, but it is built by tackling a wide range of problems and understanding why their solutions work. If you already understand the theory but struggle to know how to begin a question, we will practise breaking problems down into simpler pieces and identifying what the information given actually tells us.
Lessons are tailored to the student. I am happy to teach course content from first principles, work through challenging problems together, focus on exam technique, or go beyond the syllabus for students who want to explore physics more deeply. I can also set carefully chosen problems between lessons so that we can identify difficulties and discuss them in the next session.
I primarily teach A-Level Physics, Maths and Further Maths, with GCSE tuition also available. For students looking for something more advanced, I also offer BPhO/Physics Olympiad problem-solving and preparation for Physics-related Oxford and Cambridge admissions tests and interviews.
Lessons are online and usually around one hour, although I am flexible. I strongly recommend that students have a writing tablet so that we can both write and work through problems interactively rather than having a one-way video lecture.

Joan Pau is really good at explaining things in a way that actually makes sense. He’s patient, easy to talk to, and always happy to go over something again if you’re stuck. I’d definitely recommend him as a tutor.
Joan is a patient and thoughtful tutor who is excellent at breaking difficult problems into clear, manageable steps. He focuses on building genuine understanding rather than simply giving answers, and I would highly recommend him to any Maths or Physics student.
I highly recommend Joan Pau as a physics tutor - his style definitely helped me gain confidence in my physics. What I liked was that he always pushed me to learn new concepts - if I answered a question flawlessly, he didn't just move on but started a discussion built around my understanding of the question that would leave me thinking.
