About Sophia
Hello! My name is Sophia and I am a current PhD student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry. My undergraduate degrees are in Environmental Chemistry and Anthropology from Colby College, earning Honors in Chemistry and Outstanding in the Major for Anthropology, among other distinctions. I have extensive writing experience in both technical and creative contexts across both my majors. I am passionate about helping you succeed by taking an interdisciplinary approach, and will work with you to find the new perspective or "spark" you need to understand challenging concepts. I am offering myself as a tutor not because I need to have another source of income but because I recognize that the structured educational environment does not always meet student needs. I hope that I can help alleviate some stress and inspire self-confidence. I am a successful woman in STEM while also having ADHD and Autism. I am open to and honored to help neurodivergent students of any age with both subject matter questions and career questions.

Levels: Elementary - Undergraduate Subjects: Science (chemistry, earth sciences, technical writing and data analysis), Math (up through Calculus), Writing and Literature (argumentative and persuasive essays, creative and narrative essays, poetry analysis, writing assignments in social sciences and history, personal statements for applications, and scientific technical writing) My breadth of experiences across the humanities and sciences allows me to bridge the gap between subjects. This may make it easier for a so-called "science" student to find a spark in essay writing or a "creative" student to apply that creativity toward math and science. By pulling on your student's strengths, I can help them find new and exciting ways to think about the subjects that they find more challenging. I have experience working with elementary through undergraduate students in an educational context. I have been trained in pedagogical and study techniques as a Learning Assistant for Quantum Chemistry. I have a wide range of experiences, so please contact with subject matter needs and I will let you know if I feel confident in the material! If you are interested in an interdisciplinary and individualized approach, I may be the right tutor for you.
