About Ian

I am a professional multidisciplinary artist and creative mentor with a Master’s Degree (Distinction) in Creative Practice and over ten years of experience in visual project delivery. My practice bridges traditional fine art techniques with modern digital production, ranging from observational drawing and physical painting to digital illustration and real-time 3D pipelines.

My approach as a tutor is grounded, practical, and non-judgemental. Navigating both high-level academic work and complex creative projects has taught me that artistic growth requires structure, not pressure. I specialise in breaking down technical drawing skills, visual narrative concepts, and software tools into clear, manageable steps so you can build skill and produce great work without feeling overwhelmed.

You will receive reliable, patient, and dedicated guidance tailored entirely to your pace and goals, whether you are an adult beginner starting from scratch, an experienced artist preparing a portfolio, or a neurodivergent creator seeking a calm, structured learning environment.

About the lesson

--How I Teach--

I offer a collaborative, problem-solving approach to tuition, working with you to define your goals and break them down into clear, step-by-step strategies. I prioritise experimentation and process, helping you build skills and creative confidence through non-judgemental feedback and clear progress tracking.

--Who I Teach--

Creators of all skill levels - from complete beginners learning fundamental drawing techniques to experienced artists building university portfolios or planning complex personal projects.

I specialise in working with neurodivergent artists looking for a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.

Learners aged 16+.

--Qualifications & Experience--

MA (Distinction) in Creative Practice: Advanced background in visual narratives (comics, manga, graphic novels), multidisciplinary projects, fine art drawing, and creative theory.

Traditional & Digital Art: Experienced in physical media (pencil, pen and ink, watercolour, gouache) as well as digital pipelines using Adobe Creative Suite, Clip Studio Paint, Affinity, Blender, and Unreal Engine 5.

--Lesson Lengths and Formats--

Standard (60 minutes): ideal for weekly skill-building and drawing fundamentals.

Extended mentoring (90-120 minutes): recommended for intensive portfolio development, digital workflow setups, or deep project planning.

Delivery: In-person at my central Carlisle studio or online via Teams (digital art lessons online-only).
