About Lucy

I love maths and studied at Cardiff University, followed by a PGCE at Cheltenham and Gloucester College. I taught in high school for 10 years and have been tutoring for at least a further 10 and have completed numerous courses in education and learning styles. I have taught students from 11 to adult for a variety of different exam courses. I have been an exam marker for both AQA and Pearson for approximately 20 years and mark the GCSE every year. This gives me valuable insight into the specifications and requirements of these exams.

About the lesson

I offer 1-1 sessions to KS3, GCSE and IGCSE students and Adults online. As a subject specialist I can cover all topics and levels needed for these exams. I have a wealth of experience teaching and tutoring. I am a very approachable person and pride myself on my communication skills.

Deadly! Lucy is a wonderful tutor. From the very first meeting, she took the time to really understand my son’s needs, which was very reassuring as he struggles with high anxiety. She answered all my questions about the GCSE exams with patience and clarity, which immediately gave me confidence in her approach.
Her lessons are well-structured and organised, and she takes care to pace them in a way that makes my son feel comfortable. She explains concepts clearly, checks for understanding, and encourages him without pressure. Importantly, my son feels at ease with her teaching style. Many thanks to Lucy for her valuable support.

Lucy is a great math tutor who really helped me understand math better. She explains things in a clear and easy way, and she is always patient if I don’t get something right away. We worked on problems together step by step, and she always made sure I understood before moving on. The lessons were well-planned and not rushed. Because of her help, my grades got better, and I felt less stressed.

I would highly recommend Lucy, she really helped my daughter who was beginning to panic about GCSE maths. Although there was limited time left before the exams started Lucy set out a timescale to target the specific areas my daughter was struggling with. Lucy helped boost her confidence and self esteem to ensure she was able to focus on the exams. My daughter gave Lucy 10/10 and said the lessons really helped her. Thank you

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have always loved maths and teaching has enabled me to share that interest with others.
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
My personal favourite is algebra, I enjoy the challenge of problem solving.
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
At high school my maths teacher always challenged and stretched me to think outside the box.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience and understanding, I know many do not share my love of maths.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
I get great satisfaction from that moment something clicks for a student and they are thrilled to finally understand.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
In life there is always someone else who can do something faster or better than you, as you get older you learn to understand that this does not effect how you achieve personally.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
My passion is helping students grasp something they have tried many times but not got there before.
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?
Experience, training and qualifications, approachable personality.

Qualified, experienced Maths Teacher and Examiner offering GCSE, IGCSE, KS3 and Adult tutoring.
