About Peter

I grew up in Johannesburg, where my initial education was at St. John’s College, the Johannesburg Art Foundation (under Bill Ainslie) and, from 1976-1980, at the University of Cape Town. My career-long involvement in art education began while I was still at university, and from 1984-2020, I served as Head of Visual Arts at Bishops, Diocesan College. I am currently working as a private art tutor from my home studio in Rondebosch Cape Town, teaching children, teenagers and adults. I am also involved in a range of art-education related activities, including organizing a major community art exhibition that took place Rondebosch during July 2025 and now a community exhibition at Bishops Diocesan College scheduled for June 2026. I am also a practicing artist, working mainly in oils, acrylics, watercolors, various drawing media and sculpture.

About the lesson

Based on my 42 years of teaching experience in the field of Visual Arts education, I provide a student-focused approach to art education, teaching the essential skills and knowledge for students to flourish in the subject. I have a tried and tested approach to teaching in an incremental way and identify each student’s strength in order to unlock their creative potential. I teach in English and give practical lessons at my home-based studio in Rondebosch Cape Town, and online via Zoom. My rate for individual lessons is R 150.00 per hour, but students attending a course with others at my studio pay R 125.00 per hour. Some of the art courses I have offered for adults include: A Course in Acrylic Painting – Seeking Inspiration from Giorgio Morandi; Essential Drawing Skills – Drawing the Human Form Part 1; Painting in Watercolor – A Range of Approaches to the Medium and Painting a Still Life in Acrylics – Towards Abstraction. For my adult art classes, I cater for beginners and advanced students alike. I provide instruction for both the practical and theory components of NSC Visual Arts for Grades 10 – 12. In my practical lessons for pupils working towards the NSC Visual Arts through Grades 10 – 12, I lead pupils through the Practical Assessment Tasks (PATs) with careful attention to planning, investigation and exploration in sourcebook work. When approaching the final practical work, I always guide the pupil towards using the most appropriate medium/media given their particular strengths. In teaching the Visual Cultural Studies (theory) component I provide extensive supporting material to supplement the textbook. I also teach enrichment art classes for children with an emphasis on creativity and using a wide range of media and techniques. I teach during the school terms only.
